Ecuador’s Election Battle

February 28, 2021

Ecuador just held its first round of the Presidential Election and it is still unclear who will proceed. While Guillermo Lasso came in second place according to the electoral committee, the third place candidate, Yaku Perez, is encouraging a recount.

Andres Arauz, the candidate that proceeded to the second round, gained 32% of the votes. However, Guillermo Lasso won by a very small margin. He gained 19.87% of the votes, while Yaku Perez 19.33%. As a result of his slim loss, Yaku Pérez has decided to challenge the outcome and has called the election a "fraud."

Currently, Yaku is calling for a fair election and is hoping for a recount. His followers have come to his defense and have been protesting for the past few days. While the election committee has already given its official results, which granted Lasso the victory, Yaku is willing to continue protesting.

While Yaku Pérez has a large following, many Ecuadorians feel he lost the election and should concede. Many voters have showed their discontent for the current administration that has failed to protect its citizens, and they hope to turn the page. For many Ecuadorians the election is the only way to have their voices heard.
