Peru’s Crisis
Peru has been unlucky with the recent surge of Covid-19 cases. As a result, Peruvian doctors are urging their government for more resources to combat the novel coronavirus. Hunger strikes have been carried out by hundreds of doctors around the country in response to their governments unresponsive attitude. Since the Second wave of Covid-19 is nearing, doctors are desperately trying to get help they need. In fact, parts of Peru are experiencing up to 90% ICU occupancy rates. Unfortunately, Peru has been one of the hardest hit South American countries due to the on going pandemic. Peru has reached the grim number of one million confirmed Covid-19 cases with 40 thousand deaths. (Source: John's Hopkins University)
President Sagasti has urged his citizens to stay home and wear masks as measures to control the rising cases. Moreover, in an effort to slow the spread, it was announced that 16 million Peruvians will enter a two week lockdown starting January 27th.
