A story of hope…

OPINION PIECE:

Can you imagine the fear that comes with living in a war?

The word itself brings chills down my spine. It is safe to say that many of whom that are reading this article have never experienced war.

Three letters, one syllable, yet this single word sends chills down our spines– war.

Conflict. Disagreements. Arguments. All three of these words bring about negative connotations, and while they are similar in meaning none of them can match the fear that results from the three letter word, war.

Hollywood has showcased through blockbuster movies such as 1917 the gruesome effects of what became the first of two world altering wars. Billions of us have read the frightening stories of Adolf Hitler and the fear that was inflicted upon those of whom he targeted. History has taught us the pain of what a war can bring to a nation and the world. Yet, many of us, thankfully, have never had to wake up in fear of an invasion or imminent attack. Many of us can sleep soundly at night without the fear of a bomb or foreign adversary taking over our nation. No history lesson, movie, or book could ever prepare us for what a war truly means

Ukrainians are living out the nightmare that billions fear the most. For Ukrainians, war is no longer just a three syllable word; it has become their reality. A single man has changed the lives of an entire nation. In four days, one man managed to inflict fear not only on those he targets but the billions around the world. Imperialism, brutal conquests, and invasions seem to be issues of the past. However, the world is witnessing the brutality of Vladimir Putin’s want to conquer a free and independent nation in the 21st century.

There is no sugar coating the situation in which Ukranians find themselves; they are the underdogs and Russia is the overpowering bully. Putin, over the decades, has amassed himself with one of the largest and most powerful armed forces of the modern day. Despite its unconventional situation, Ukraine has proved to the world what it means to defend freedom. It is safe to say that a small nation with approximately 100 million less inhabitants has bruised the ego of a man who hoped for a swift and inconsequential takeover. Instead of hiding in fear, Ukraine did what the world did not expect; they fought. President Zelensky has risen up to be a face of hope in this path of darkness.

Not once has Ukraine shown Putin surrender. Not once has Zelensky bowed to his nations attacker. Not once has Zelenksy given up on his people. Ukraine’s heroic president stands in front of the television everyday to speak to his people without an ounce of fear in his eyes. Putin had hoped to rip the freedom of a nation, yet he found himself battling a country of freedom fighters.
